Ii people are distinctly sports-minded. For many the spark for Finnish baseball was lit on the fields of Ii Hamina, and the passion still burns. Lumberjack skills are inherited by each succeeding generation, although there has been no log floating in Ii-river since the 1980s.

Ii, with its magnificent coastline and unspoilt nature, myriad islands, fish-laden waters, guest marinas and wide variety of staged events, draws visitors all-year-round from other parts of the country and further afield, swelling the numbers of local inhabitants and holidaymakers who have long since succumbed to its charms. Inhabitants’ number is around 9,500, while there are over 1,500 leisure apartments.
